Apple plans to sell forty percent of the Smartphone Market by the Year 2013

By Jason • Jan 16th, 2009 • Category: Mobile Phones

According to analysts Generator Research, Apple is all set in the next five years to grab at least forty percent of the market around the world, racing ahead of Nokia smartphone devices. Generator’s research head Andrew Sheehy says the strategy that will be adopted by Apple to develop the App Store and iPhone will be similar to that of its digital music platform namely the iTunes and iPod.

Sheehy goes on to say that in keeping with the mobile industry’s requirement of a platform similar to those developed by outsiders which are fully integrated and sport an API accessible on terms that are favourable to third party developers, Apple’s platform currently is one of the best.

At a time when some of the established companies in the market are cutting down on development costs, Apple has the right amount of competency, resources and motivation to invest in spurring the growth rate of its iPhone. According to Generator, this will be taken care of with Apple’s 33 percent gross margins and over $25 billion cash reserves.

Nokia’s smartphone market share is predicted to fall to 20 percent by the year 2013 as compared to the current 40 percent. Nokia smartphones, like the Nokia E71, are not expected to hold out against the iPhone. Other major players will be substantially affected as well.

According to Sheehy, the available resources will be made use of by Apple to get ahead of competition. Apple could ship at least 77 million iPhones by 2013 spanning different models across various market segments.
